Rebecca Auer, M.D., Ph.D.

Senior Scientist, Associate Professor, Scientific Director, Surgical Oncologist Cancer Therapeutics Program and Ottawa Hospital Research Institute

Dr. Auer is interested in all aspects of cancer surgery, from diagnosis to surgery for metastatic disease. As a Surgeon-Scientist, Dr. Auer heads a research laboratory and is the principal investigator in related clinical trials. Her translational research program focuses on understanding the promotion of metastatic disease in the perioperative period, following surgical stress. In particular she is studying novel perioperative cancer therapies, including oncolytic viruses, cancer vaccines and low molecular weight heparin, which inhibit the formation of metastases postoperatively.

Dr. Kimmelman: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Identifying metabolic dependencies in pancreatic cancer.

Alec C. Kimmelman, M.D., Ph.D.

Anita Steckler and Joseph Steckler Professor and Chair of Radiation Oncology at the NYU Langone Health

Dr. Kimmelman has published over 70 articles which extensively delve into the cancer field. As an NIH funded investigator, he has been studying the critical biological functions of Ras oncogenes for more than 15 years. Dr. Kimmelman’s lab is currently focused on the basic and translational science of pancreatic cancer biology. His research has elucidated unique metabolic pathways in pancreatic cancer and has identified how the Kras oncogene can re-wire the metabolism of these tumors. His lab was the first to demonstrate that pancreatic cancers have elevated autophagy which is required for proper metabolic function and growth.
